|Location description: ||Turpin Cottage has a magical location. Set on a south-facing hillside just outside Thornton-le-Moor, the North Yorkshire countryside sweeps away from the barn towards the horizon giving you uninterrupted views of the stunning landscape below. The local area is referred to as Herriot Country, taking its name from the much-loved vet-cum-author who lived in the area for more than 50 years. Set between the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors, and with less than an hour’s drive to the coast and the City of York, it’s an ideal basecamp from which to strike out and discover these unique Yorkshire locations. The village of Thornton-le-Moor itself is a sleepy little place with two rows of brick houses and an excellent pub, The Black Swan. It’s set between the historic market towns of Thirsk and Northallerton, both of which make for a lovely day out. Thirsk is a busy working market town where handsome Georgian houses gather politely around a cobbled market square. There are lots of shops and pubs here, enough to keep you busy for a while and there’s also a charming race-course on the outskirts of town. For those of you with a penchant for classic British TV, the James Herriot museum in the town will provide a trip down memory lane. Northallerton has that same Georgian appeal, this time with a long straight high-street housing all manner of delights; the wonderful Betty’s Tearooms is here as is a fantastic local deli, Lewis & Cooper’s Food Emporium and of course the quintessentially Yorkshire department store of Barkers. Just a short drive through Bedale takes you into the heart of the Yorkshire Dales proper. Head up towards Leyburn and on towards Hawes in Wensleydale for a true taste of this magnificent countryside. Stop at the Wensleydale Heiffer for lunch before heading back to the comfort of your luxury Yorkshire cottage. To take in the North York Moors head in the opposite direction and brave it up Sutton Bank, the view from the top said by some to be the finest in all of England. The gorgeous market town of Helmsley makes for the perfect pit-stop and if you feel like something special for lunch make your way to the Star Inn at Harome. So much to do, so little time!|
